Geekdom 0

Shortly after we named our baby girl it was brought to my attention that we had given our little Gabriella an interesting set of initials. At my work our userids are comprised of our first initial, middle initial, and the first few letters of our last name, and if Gabriella were to be employed here her userid would be (of all things) GEEK. One of the ladies at work mentioned it to me and she gave a little mocking laugh and asked if we had realized what we had done to our daughter. At the time I couldn’t really figure out how to respond to her mocking joke because I was thinking that it was pretty cool that Gabriella’s initials spelled out the word geek.

I suppose it is because I consider myself a geek… and in my world being a geek is not a bad thing. I ran across this article that I thought was enjoyable and thought I would share with those of you who think geeks are cool too.

Fun stuff I never learned in geography class. I especially liked the one that says “Largest island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island.”

I work for Wal-Mart and so when I ran into this image that shows the total acreage of Wal-Mart retail facilities, I thought that I would share. Click here.

Right or Left-Brain? 2

Oct12

I ran across this mesmerizing optical illusion this morning. Very cool. It’s a left-brain vs. right-brain test…which way she spins for you determines which side of your brain is more dominant. I saw it turning clockwise right off the bat. It took some effort to get it to reverse. Reply to this post and tell which way you saw it going.

(Tip: if you’re having trouble getting her to switch directions, focus on a point a couple of inches below her feet…that seems to do it for me.)

1-800-GOOG-411 0

We have been taking advantage of a  free 411 service this last year called 1-800-FREE-411.  It is “free” in the sense that it doesn’t increase your phone bill.  The real cost is that you have to wait through some annoying advertisements.  It works most of the time, although recently we have had some annoying difficulty with it.  For example, Meredith couldn’t get it to understand the word “Sears” (the department store).  Well, I  have discovered a new, free-er 411.  No advertisements, and much better.  1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-4664411) is Google’s new 411 service.  I tried it out and I love it.  It is also somewhat amusing… the guy makes a funny “computing” sound when it is thinking.  I tried out “Sears” and it recognized it right off. Check out a little video about it: http://www.google.com/goog411/
